Title: noise simulation of the mixer
Post by nxing on Jul 10th, 2007, 4:54pm

Hi there,

I have a question about the noise simulation, from the Cadence tutorial, there are three ways to simulate the mixers NF: PNOISE with a DC input at RF port, the PSP following a PSS and QPNOISE following QPSS. I am wondering which one is more accurate? Even from the tutorial, I can see that the simulation results from the former two are different.

Thanks

Hi.

If you simply evaluate NF of mixer in same situation as using actual instruments such as
Agilent N8975A NFA Series Noise Figure Analyzer or 8970A,
use PSS/Pnoise or PSS/PSP with DC input as RF input where only LO is large signal.
In this case both PSS/Pnoise and PSS/PSP give you same results unless you set wrong setting in simulation.

If you study an effect of NF degradation due to RF compression or desentitization,
use QPSS/QPnoise or QPSS/QPSP with large RF input.
