Title: Inherited connections in Cadence schematic
Post by rajdeep on Feb 13th, 2014, 9:46am

Hi All,

Is it possible to connect a pin called X (Say) of a schematic S with a block B's pin with the same name X without drawing a physical wire?

I think this is called inherited connection by name or something. I am not sure. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Rajdeep

Rajdeep,
inherited connection is commonly used to define which net the power/ground connections of a certain part of the hierarchy tree should connect to.
This is achieved by global nets with inherit attributes: setting the associated attribute to a net propagates this net down the hierarchy to connect to all uses of this global net until overridden.
Does this help?

You probably want to use connections by name. These are made by connecting wire stubs to the pins and putting labels with the same name on them. You can find details in chapter 2 "Understanding Connectivity and Naming Conventions" of the Virtuoso Schematic Editor L User Guide at http://support.cadence.com/wps/PA_DocumentViewer/pubs/comphelp/comphelp6.1.6/comphelp.pdf.

Inherited connections are often used to connect the power supply pins of digital standard cells. You can learn about them with the Rapid Adoption Kit "Basics of Inherited Connections" available from http://support.cadence.com/wps/mypoc/cos?uri=deeplinkmin:DocumentViewer;src=wp;q=ProductInformation/Custom_IC_Design/ApplicationPackages/CIC_RAK_Home.htm.
