Tool for doing frequency domain plots ?
Dec 03rd, 2007, 7:56am

Hi,

does anyone of you know a tool to do frequency domain plots ?
Those axis with cute arrows labeled (omega)1, (omega)2 and so on ?
I thought of something like
x=A*cos(w1*t)+B*cos(w2*t)
y=x^3 and that tool should plot me the resulting frequency components of y labeled with multiples of w1 and w2.

I know that Maple can do the algebraic calculations, but I've not seen a tool for doing this stuff and plotting the results ...

Regards,

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I've used Mathematica for such plots. The code is only a few lines long. The only problem with Mathematica is that the learning curve is steep. Fortunately you only have to climb the learning curve once.

You might want to take a look at Maxima (http://maxima.sourceforge.net/). According to its homepage, it can do plots. There is some discussion about Maxima at http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=73462. Disclaimer: I discovered it with Google only a few minutes ago, I have not used it yet.

You also might want to look at gnuplot (http://www.gnuplot.info/ ) supports plotting publication quality data, plus it will do function plots. Pretty nice looking
