Title: How to design an universal amplifier with cmos
Post by sandyk on Aug 11th, 2006, 3:09pm

Hi everyone,

I have to design an universal amplifier with 0.5 um cmos technology...It should function as
1)VCVS
2)VCCS
3)CCCS
4)CCVS

i have to accomplish this for min. of 100 unit gain with one ckt and i can use switches to get various outputs as needed..

can someone help???

thanks in advance....

Some more details please -

To what bandwidth?
To what accuracy?

If it is low frequency, there are some op-amp and OTA circuits that will get this done without any problems. But will it be perfect? No, but we all need to know some more details about what you are trying to do.

Hi evryone,

Giving you the complete details...

a Universal Amplifier block so that one can get all the basic amplifier functions , i.e., VCVS, VCCS,CCCS,CCVS from this single module.

0.5 micron CMOS process.

+ and – 3V power supplies (Maximum)

sample calculations regarding design and verify with simulation results (HSPICE, level=3)

Minimum gain should be 100 units (for VCCS the unit could be milli mho or micro mho)

a data sheet summarizing important parameters of the amplifier module. Some of these will be

   * Total DC power consumption
   * Total transistor area used
   * Number of external voltage/current sources needed
   * Interconnection hints for obtaining a specific amplifier function (i.e., VCVS)
   * Gain at low frequency and band-width (-3dB) (show test set-up)
   * Input and output resistances (show the test set-up)
   * Overall output-input delay (1pf load) (show test set-up)
   * Overall settling time (1 pf load) (show test set-up)
   * Slew rate (open circuit, 1 pf load) (show test set-up)
   * Input common mode range (voltage or current) for linear operation (show test set-up)

schematics of all the sub-systems employed.

gain and phase plots

Sandy:

Two things:

1. What is the Bandwidth Needed?

2. You stated + and - 3V supply.
That is a little "different" shall we say.
For .5 CMOS to do that, your "ground pin" will need to be connected to -3V.

So, some more information is still needed here. The BW is the important one.
