Title: Active inductor simulation
Post by suryakumari on Sep 11th, 2010, 1:47am

Hi

i am doing my M.Tech in Vlsi design, currently i am going with my project work. My project is designing low noise amplifier using active inductor, but i am unable to do simulation of active inductor in cadence 130nm.
can anyone tel me the steps to proceed to get plot of inductance and quality factor with frequency also if you find any material or books regarding active inductor can you please attach.

waiting for reply

There is no difference whether it is active or passive inductor as far as your interest is a characteristics regarding small signal.

Simply do conventional AC analysis.
There can never be any confusion.

What do you mean by "cadence 130nm" ?

Post your questions to simulator's board since your questions seem to be no more than usage of very specific vedndor's simulator.

Thank u..
here i am simulating active inductor alone, it is single ended active inductor,,but S parameter analysis is for two port, i connected on end to the input port.
actually the other end is connected to either Vdd or gnd..
then h can i define second port ??

Thank u

Answer my question.

Do one port S-parameter Analysis.
But I recommend you to use AC-analysis not SP-analysis.

Show me schematic for test bench.

Hi Surya,

Use kirchoff's equation and find out what is V/I at the port 1 (if you are planning on using a single ended inductor) or between Port 1 and port 3 (for differential inductor), where V is the source voltage and I is the current flowing from the source voltage.

Equate the V/I to R(the port impedance)+jwL (L is the effective inductance of the circuit for single ended inductances) . The inductance is approx. C0/gm1.gm2 where gm1 and gm2's are the transconductances of NM0 and PM1 (please double check this as i could be mistaken here).

ps. looks like a PDK from NXP?
