you can use xcircuit in windos or Xfig in linux.

I like Visio too, but the OP asked for "free", which Visio is not.

I'd say go get LTspice and have not only a schematic editor/creator, but a full-blown Spice simulator too!

Visio is what I use for just drawings (not free) - LTSpice is a free simulator that includes present day transistor models.
