Hello,

I am a little confused about the envelope detector and peak detector. Are they same or different. It seems peak detector usually works for square wave, but envelope detector can work work any AM signal. Could you explain some details or suggest some references?

I cannot find any difference between envelope detector and peak detector since both of them need to detect the peak value of amplitude then rebuild the waveform. Any comments?

They are mostly the same -

The difference I have seen is that the BW of a peak detector is fast enough to respond to local amplitude variances than an envelope detector.

However it is a bit fuzzy.

Also, a peak detector is often associated with a specific magnetic recording readback circuit. (they were widely used prior to PRML channels prior to 1995)

Thank you for your reply. Actually I try to simulate an envelope detector, but still cannot do it successfully. If you are familiar with this topic, could you check this post and give me some hints?
