Title: Measure power consumption in ADC
Post by webb0111 on May 7th, 2007, 12:15pm

Hello,

I was wondering what the best way to measure the power conumstion of my delta-sigma modulator is (either in Cadence or using measurements from Cadence).  One way I think would work is to measure the current, then multiply by the supply voltage, but this does not seem like it would be the most accurate.

Maybe there is already info about this on here and I could not find it?

Thank you

Matt

Matt,

If your models are reasonably accurate, it seems like this approach
should work. You might need to calculate the RMS current since the
current may vary as a function of time. Certainly, you can repeat the
analysis across corners, PVT, to get more accurate results. Could you
share your reasons for believing that this calculation is not correct?

                                                        Best Regards,

I was just under the belief that this would be a good way of estimating the power consumption, but that there might be a more accurate way.  Possibly by measuring each individual component and summing or something to that effect.  (I'm still very new at this).

Thanks,

Matt

Given this is a Σ-Δ and presumably used with audio, you should make sure you have a real world input signal with adequate crest factor that exercises the full-scale.

Hi, Sheldon,

I think that the power consumption is VDD*average (current). Please see the thread http://www.designers-guide.org/Forum/YaBB.pl?num=1158283735/2#2.

To power consumption, you have to measure the average current, not the RMS value. Run the simulation for certain period of time and measure the average current. You can do it using OCEAN script also. There is a seperate command called "average" in OCEAN script. For all syntaxes please follow any OCEAN guide.
