Hi all...

If the buck converter output is 1.2V and input varies from 2.7V to 3.3V and current is 500mA,and temp variation is -40 to 125.Buck is used in portable applications.Is it required to have thermal shutdown ?

Yes.
All converters has Thermal Shut Down. if you did mistake in design or from some reason load increase it can burn the chip.
Pay attention from noise.....
