Optical Simulation
Sep 03rd, 2003, 3:25pm

Hello,

I am planning to use Cadence Spice or SpectreRF to design a transimpedance amplifier.

Question and subsequent problem is I do not know how to simulate eye diagrams, nor create them in Cadence.

If anyone has any experience or tips or resources for these types of simulations (high speed wireline I suppose), please let me know.

Thank you for your time and have a great day !

In IC50 the Calculator in the Analog Design Environment
has a "Special Function" for doing eye diagrams.

If you're using an earlier version, I can send you my SKILL
code to do the same thing.

These allow a transient waveform to be displayed as
an eye diagram.

Also, there is a behavioural model in ahdlLib or rfLib (I'm
not sure which off the top of my head) which can
be used to plot an eye diagram by using one of its outputs
as the X axis.

Regards,

Andrew.

Andrew,

I would be interested in the skill code too.  Have to use Cadence for a new design (all our past simulation were done on Mentor).

Thanks,

I would be interested in Andrew's code too, as many others, I believe. Could you provide it as "contributed paper" on this web site?

Paul,

That's the plan. Ken already sent me the template to
do this - it's just a matter of me finding a free moment
to do this. Won't be in the next week as I'm on vacation,
but it's still in my list of things to do...

Andrew.

Sorry, I never got around to writing this up - it seemed a little pointless since IC446 is no longer supported, and eyeDiagram is available as a special function in IC50 onwards.

So my recommendation is to use IC5033 or IC5141 which have this function built in. Also, wavescan (the new waveform tool) has the ability to do this natively (double-click on the x-axis, and you can tell it the period to do the eye-diagram over).

Regards,

Andrew.
