Same design different technology
Jul 02nd, 2008, 8:37am

If you have an implemented circuit(for instance a MOS intergrator) in 1.2μm technology  and you want to re-desing it in a different technology, for example 0.35μm, what steps you need to take when it comes to the transistor parameters?Do you need to define something more than different  aspsect ratios in order to have the same circuit in the different technology? Thanks!

If you simply scale your parameters (or even if you keep them the same), you'll end up with the same circuit.
But your performance will be completely different. This is a very complex topic and even modern design houses don't have a cookbook like recipe for that. To be more precise, you can solely use the original design as starting point for a complete new design iteration.

Thanks for the reply. At first I just need a circuit with similar behaviour and then analyze the performance issues. So scaling down the transistor aspect ratios accordingly is a good way to start?

It depends.

Maybe you can try to keep the same design as before and test the performance in the simulation, later let the result guide you how to modify the size. I think from 1.2u to 0.35u the performance will not have significant difference, but from .35u to 90n or even less will have significant changes.

I need to go from 1.2 to 0.35...I been thinkng from the start  of keeping the same design and aspect ratios for the different technology and see how it goes from there....If the performance isn't very different it shoudn't be that difficult to make the neccessary size modifications...
