What is the need for having high precision ADC?
Mar 12th, 2013, 12:09am

In the RF receive block after all the amplifying stages we have ADC. Usually I see that to be in the order of 14 bits (for example). This means that SNR is of about 85 dB. According to communication theory it is possible to obtain a good BER with an SNR of about 25 dB itself. Then why is it necessary to have a high precision ADC?

Hi,

if any filtering is done after digitization, then you need to take into account the increased dynamic range due to interference. You need to be able to resolve below the noise level, and up to the highest interferrer level.
