The thing is you need to know a series of things before knowing vco. 1. Study voltage noise and understand its statistics. Read the first chapter of introduction to Random process by William Gardner 2. Understand phase domain representations of VCO,VCDL, phase detectors etc from any PLL lectures. Understand why an oscillator is an integrator in phase domain. 3. Now understand NBFM to get a relation between voltage noise and phase noise. 4. Now read Da Dalt's book chapters to get more intuition about phase noise. References for IEEE will be the in this book.
These are some ways I've been through which i discovered myself.
