question on relation betwn jitter and phase noise
Jan 23rd, 2005, 1:56am

hi all:

in many papers,(such as hajimiri's), the relationship  betwn jitter and phase noise is obtained by :

(period jitter)^2=E [(phi(t+dt)-phi(t))^2]
                        =2*[Rphi(0)-Rphi(dt)]/w^2;
here E[.] denote the expected value,
R(.) , the autocorrelation function,
and my question is, is phi(t) a WSS process ?? ???

Jeffyan,
   phi is a Weiner process, which is not WSS. It is not stationary in any sense.

dear Ken:
yes, phi(t) is a wiener process.
in hajimiri's phd thesis (appendix A),the above relation betwn jitter and phase noise is given, and in his fowlowing appendix B, he stated phi(t) is a wiener process.

in some papers,such as "analysis of the PLL jitter due to power/ground and substrate noise" (Payam Heydari, ieee trans on circuits and systems-I: regular paper,vol.51.no.12,2004)) and Mozhgan Mansuri's phd thesis (UCLA) both quoted above relationship between jitter and phase noise.

so i want to know whether the relationship above is based on the assuption that phi(t) is a WSS process.
and if not,is  the above relationship right?   ???

thanks in advance.
