best books for pll design
Jul 11th, 2007, 1:10am

I am an RFIC designer, before I was designing RF blocks like VCO and so on. Now I will start to design PLL. Please recommend some good books for me, thank you.

I know two books my colledge recommended, Best and Gardner, which is better for a designer?

i don't think E.Best's book is a good book for design.

Rolland Best is good for starting. Gardner is good for theory analysis.

Frankly speaking, I do not remember much in Gardner's book. However, without it, u can not fully understand a few things in PLL.

Just ream them all.

Thanks a lot, buckaroo and neoflash!

I had a glance at the contents of these two books, I believe these books mainly provide theroctical and system level knowlege, I agree it is a good start to read them both.

However, is there any book talking about designs of differnent plls and their building blocks? As I am a circuit designer, it will be of more practical help to me.

Please give some suggestions, thanks in advance.

Hi, I think Gardner's book is good but was written before the charge pump PLLs with digital phase detectors.  Best's book is very detailed on describing locking process, but I don't find it useful for much else.  "Frequency Synthesis by Phase Lock" (William Egan) has some chapters describing frequency dividers and phase detectors.  Several of Razavi's books give pretty good introductory analysis of PLL systems, as well as oscillator design.  (He also has a book on PLLs that I haven't read yet, so can't tell you about that.)  Also, Dean Banerjee has an applications oriented PLL book, which has a lot of details on PLL loop filter design, and you can download it for free (the last time I checked) from National Semiconductor website.

Hope that helps.

The PLL book by Dean Banerjee is described in more detail at http://www.national.com/appinfo/wireless/pll_designbook.html and can be downloaded at http://www.national.com/appinfo/wireless/files/deansbook4.pdf.

if it is ring oscillator vco may i suggest the IEEE JSSC paper by John Maneatis

IEEE JSSC - November 1996

Also the Phase Freq Detector in there is useful for all PLL structures.

I recommend "Integrated Circuit Design for High-Speed Frequency Synthesis", it deals with a lot of the IC-design-specific issues in PLL design, and makes an excellent accompanying text to Gardner or Egan.

Also from National Semi, a good intro :
