hello all,

what are some good books on designing Mixers?

particularly on gilbert type double balanced mixers...

thank you...

I don't think there is a good book just on the topic of mixer design.

Most RF/RFIC books include mixers as a topic, but I can't point to one that stands out over the other. Each usually covers the fundamental concepts behind mixers, but not necessarily the design details. There are a plethora of papers on the topic with detailed information; although, sometimes it is difficult to pull the design details out of the discussion.

The other problem is that the design details are somewhat specific to the technology of interest (CMOS versus bipolar) even though the topology is the same. I don't think I have seen a text or paper that deals with the details of both.

So, what are you looking for?

Thanks for the reply...

i want to design mixers in CMOS(180nm) tech.

can u suggest a paper which serves as a good starting point for gilbert type mixers..

Can't start better than this...

Gilbert, Barrie. ``A precise four-quadrant multiplier with subnanosecond response," IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, 3:365, 1968.

Hi,

try two papers by the authors, Terrovitis, M.T. & Meyer, R.G., named

"Noise in Current-Commutating CMOS Mixers"

and

"Intermodulation Distortion in Current-Commutating CMOS Mixers"

both are published in the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits

cheers,
Aaron

Once you've managed to digest the theory and operation of mixers, Agilent ADS has some simple but interesting examples on RF Mixers, that are particularly useful in understanding the basic tradeoffs for simple topologies.

Nonetheless, it helps to know all or most of the theory before you start toying around with the design tool!

Cheers.

Hi,

There a few books about mixers published by Stephan A. Maas
try "Microwave mixers" for example

I don't think this book is useful for mixer in VLSI.
