Best way to connect BNC socket to PCB?
Mar 12th, 2012, 11:57am

Hi everyone,
I am almost done building my first 3 meters band transmitter (it is a veronica 5 watt), and I just hit a question mark..
What is the best way to connect the antenna trace to the BNC female socket?
The author of the schematic says to solder the BNC socket right on the PCB, but that is very impractical once the transmitter is in an enclosure, as connecting and disconnecting the antenna would require opening up the enclosure every time...
I would ideally like to mount the BNC socket on the enclosure, so that the socket is outside the box.
The distance between the trace and the chassis is really small, around 3 cm.
Should I make a short coax run from the antenna trace to the BNC socket?
or
should I solder the female socket on the PCB, then connect a right-angle BNC adapter to it, and then a last straight BNC adapter if I still miss a few mm to reach the enclosure?
I am sure this is a basic issue, surely someone here can help me?

Thanks!

Luke

Sounds a bit like a hobby or amateur radio project?

something like that will stick off the side of the PCB

Thank you,
yes it is totally a hobby project.
I will probably go with a right angle adapter and another one after that.
So in general, short coax runs are not recommended inside an enclosure?

for a commercial product not that good an idea,

one-of-a-kind for hobby stuff, not a big deal.

a commercial product would generally have a BNC that goes through the outside of the box.
