Design of HV DAC
Mar 03rd, 2016, 2:05am

Hello,
I am looking at possible options for design of 10 bit DAC in 180nm whose input is in 3-5V domain but needs to have an output in 40V domain.(Will be used in MEMs ASIC for Tuning and quadrature correction).
Requirement is to have a low area and low power ( high current drawn from LV supply is ok, but would like to have a low HV supply current draw) and monotonicity.
Most popular option seems to be a segmented resistor string DAC followed by HV Amplifier ( cascade of VtoI and ItoV converter).
Are there any other options which are preferable ( either from area or power point of view) ? Any interesting papers that I might look at?
Thank you.

40V Output?

10 bits resolution?

What conversion rate?

It it is slow I would use a PWM method because then you have only one HV transistor and a LPF that has to be good to that voltage as well. Keep it simple.

Hello,

Yes, I need a 40V output. Resolution needed is low ( say 6 bits).
Update rate is slow, say 500 Hz - 1KHz.
I am interested in looking at architectures with
a> low current draw from HV supply
b> low area
c> low noise
d> low HF ( ~60KHz) output impedance

Any leads would be appreciated !

Thanks

Hi Anakin,

Any HV transistor available?  Jerry's suggestion sounds good.

Best Regards,

Hello,
HV transistors are available ( both 5V and 40V ).
I am still working out the details of pwm based HV DAC , but meanwhile if you feel some other architectures might fit the bill, please share your thoughts ( with paper/tutorial links hopefully). Thanks !

at the low bit resolution of 6 bits, and the low/audio type update rate, I see no need for anything more complex than PWM.
