Is Phase Noise (VCO) affected by amplifier ?
Apr 07th, 2008, 11:53am

Hi,

Is the Phase Noise (VCO) specified in terms of dbC/ Hz affected by the amplifier that follows it ? The amplifier contribuites noise i.e. has noise figure > 0.

I am confused about the overall phase noise  i.e. cascasde of VCO and buffer amplifier...

Any links / references and explanation will be certainly helpful

voltage noise is different from timing noise (jitter). So, the noise of the buffer amplifier is converted to timing jitter in the way of modulating the zero-crossing timings.

You can look for Ken's document on this topic inside this website. It is a MUST to read for clock designers.
